Hubert Dreyfus, AfterTV, 2006/02/16

Andrew Keen interviews:

Professor Hubert Dreyfus of UC Berkeley’s Philosophy department and author of What Computers Still Can’t Do: A Critique of Artificial Intelligence, is probably the most distinguished critic of artificial intelligence on the planet. As the author of Thinking in Action: On the Internet and Mind over Machine, Dreyfus is also a leading critic of digital culture and technology. Talking with Dreyfus was a treat. His wit and erudition represent a refreshing break from much of the sanctimonious techno-babble emanating out of Silicon Valley.

Dreyfus’ background — particularly associated with MIT during the period of “Good Old Fashioned Artificial Intelligence” is interesting.

Dreyfus is well known for his scholarship on Heidegger, but seems to prefer Merleau-Ponty, in support of his understanding of skills. One formula that I think I heard was: (Heidegger) – (existentialism) = (Merleau-Ponty)

  • GParted fails; KDE Partition Manager succeeds
Repartitioning disk with Ubuntu 16.04 GParted fails; Kubuntu 17.04 KDE Partition Manager works. Booting my Thinkpad X200 from an Ubuntu 16.04 live USB key, GParted was able to successfully shrink a NTFS partition and leave unallocated space.  Then, a request to either (i) shrink the existing \ EXT4 partition, or (ii) create a new empty […]
