I haven’t directly studied Robert Lucas’ work in economics, so his name is familiar for strange reasons: he endorsed the work of Jane Jacobs … which is a bit strange for mainstream economists.

Bob Lucas, Nobel Laureate and professor of economics at the University of Chicago talks about wealth and poverty, what affects living standards around the world and over time, the causes of business cycles and the role of the money in our economy. Along the way, he talks about Jane Jacobs, immigration, and Milton Friedman’s influence on his career.

Rosabeth Moss Kanter is well known amongst business academics for her research into organizational change.

To characterize America’s current winter of discontent she quoted Woody Allen: “One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.” Panic leads to abandoning principles, and that is how successes end.

Kanter commends three principles in particular for renewal of the faltering American enterprise…

* Open minds. In the clash between orthodoxy and creativity, opt for the spirit of discovery and progress.

* Higher purpose and sense of meaning.

[...]One example she knows from her own consulting work is IBM. Shortly after the new CEO Sam Palmisano took over in 2002, he instituted an online “ValuesJam” with 300,000 employees. [....]

* Common ground. Inclusiveness and shared responsibility is a particularly American principle first noted and celebrated by Alexis de Tocqueville. It is reflected in Bill Clinton’s observation, “Big government is being replaced by big citizens.”

Jane Jacobs had cited the role that artists play in regional development, so I was intrigued by the title of this talk.

Doug McDavid said that he was reading The Biology of Business. I decided to take a short cut and look for the MP3 audio, which showed up on IT Conversations.

On the last day of Supernova 2005, John Clippinger, Senior Fellow of The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, spoke about his work at Socialphysics.org. According to the website, “The goal of SocialPhysics is to help create a new commons, the ’social web.’ The social web is a layer built on top of the Internet to provide a trusted way to link people, organizations, and concepts.”John approaches Social Physics from a multidisciplinary perspective drawing from theories of economics, philosophy, neurology and behavioral science. John discusses the role of trust in developing a social network. He suggests that centralized, authoritarian systems in networks are antithetical to non-hierarchical empathetic interaction on the Internet. Today, he says, individuals do not have the power to control their digital identity and what is needed are new roles to protect and empower those individuals on the edge, rather than at the center of networks. He suggests that by using systems of tagging (as a form of reputation) and empathy, people in networks are better able to meet those goals.John says that markets are social networks; using tools like his open source software framework, Higgins, he and others are experimenting and creating new avenues for meta identity on the Internet.

The idea of the “attention economy” seems relatively popular, but its history may not go back that far. Andrew Keen interviews …

In the December 1997 issue of Wired magazine, Michael Goldhaber wrote an extremely influential article entitled “Attention Shoppers” which argued “the currency of the New Economy won’t be money, but attention.” Goldhaber’s theory of the “Attention Economy” has influenced a wide range of digital thinkers — from Esther Dyson to Nick Carr to John Hagel. Meanwhile Goldhaber hasn’t rested on his laurels. Since 1997, he’s been refining his ideas and he is currently working on a book about the Attention Economy.

My undergraduate training in economics required one course in economic history. If I had to do it all over again, I would study more economic history. Here’s an interview by Chris Gondek that continues that learning.

I would guess that more people are critics of Milton Friedman than have ever heard his voice. Here’s an opportunity to hear him in an interview.

Russ Roberts talks to Milton Friedman about the radical ideas he put forward almost 50 years ago in Capitalism and Freedom. Listen to the most influential economist of the past 50 years discuss the principles of liberty, social responsibility of business, the inertia behind bad legislation and his career as economist and public intellectual.
