Chris Gondek interviews …

This is a deceptive book. As I mentioned in the show, it is not very long, but it is pretty deep. His answer to my question about Isaiah Berlin can give you a sense of the book, although we did not discuss another important facet of his book, the work of Anthony Giddens and structuration theory. We talked a little about it before we did the interview, but decided that Berlin was more important and easier to explain than Giddens.

In a fascinating synthesis, Robert “r0ml” Lefkowitz polishes up his exposition on the evolving meaning of the term ‘open source’. This intellectual joy-ride draws on some of the key ideas in artificial intelligence to probe the role of language, meaning and context in computing and the software development process. Like Wittgenstein’s famous thought experiment, the open source ‘beetle in a box’ can represent different things to different people, bearing interesting fruit for philosophers and software creators alike.

… with Chris Trimble, co-author, with Vijay Govindarajan, of Ten Rules for Strategic Innovators: From Idea to Execution. As Trimble explains, even world-class companies, with powerful and proven business models, eventually discover limits to their growth. That’s what makes the ongoing process of strategic innovation so important. But constructing tomorrow’s businesses while simultaneously sustaining excellence in today’s competitive environment demands a delicate balance. Trimble helps us understand the barriers faced by strategic innovators and how to get around them.

… Santa Fe Institute … Scott Page was one of the people I met and he mentioned that he had just finished a book for Princeton on diversity.
The work on diversity and complexity that is done at both Michigan and Santa Fe is pretty mind-boggling. This book is a very accessible way to learn about how diversity can work and, more importantly, how to get out of thinking of diversity as a politically correct concept and begin to think of diversity as an extremely powerful problem solving tool.

Vernor Vinge, “What If the Singularity Does NOT Happen?”, Long Now Foundation, 2007/02/15 October 22, 2007

Vinge began by declaring that he still believes that a Singularity event in the next few decades is the most likely outcome— meaning that self-accelerating technologies will speed up to the point of so profound a transformation that the other side of it is unknowable. And this transformation will be driven by Artifical Intelligences (AIs) that, once they become self-educating and self-empowering, soar beyond human capacity with shocking suddeness.
